Our Story: From One Connection to a Coalition

ATX116 Alliance was born out of a moment of crisis—and a spark of connection. In early 2025, when the future of Lamar Middle School and Dobie Middle School was suddenly thrown into question, educators, parents, and community members across Austin ISD began to speak up. Some voices were suspicious and not welcoming to the Dobie community. What transpired was a moment highlighting the need for community-building across campuses and especially the segregated landscape of I35. What started as concern quickly became something more powerful: solidarity.

One conversation—between an East Austin educator and a West Austin parent—became the first bridge in what would grow into a network. We realized we didn’t just need to advocate for our schools. We needed to stand up for every school.

That’s how the ATX116 Coalition began. The name represents all 116 schools in Austin ISD. Our slogan—116 schools. 1 future.—reflects our mission: to build a collective where parents, teachers, and community members from every corner of the district are represented and connected.

This is a grassroots effort, but we believe it can reshape how power, policy, and partnership work in public education. Co-founded by Heather Wong (an East-side educator) and Jessie Neufeld (a West-side parent), we are growing one school at a time. Jessie is helping connect parent representatives. Heather is reaching out to school teachers. Together, we’re building a coalition where every campus has a seat at the table.

This started with a crisis. It continues with a commitment. And we’re just getting started.
